Our Ministries

Home / Our Ministries

Everything we do is guided by the call of Jesus:

‘Give without expecting a return’ (Luke 6:35)

St. Lucas provides a hot breakfast every Sunday for the hungry and homeless of our community. The ministry started on Sunday, September 16, 2007, with 8 persons served. Today we serve over 125 individuals every Sunday morning, from 7:30-8:30 AM.

ECHO
Lucas Place, a service of Echo Housing, is an apartment complex for individuals/families with handicaps. St. Lucas works closely with the staff of Lucas Place in providing services for its children and families, including an Easter Egg Hunt, back-to-school supplies, and a giving tree at Christmas. St. Lucas also provides welcome baskets and coffee at Lucas Place II, the new complex for homeless veterans.

Open and Affirming Ministry

This ministry works to support local efforts to accept and include our LGBTQ+ friends and neighbors as valued members of the community. We resist policies and practices of exclusion, especially the religious bigotry against this population. We also participate in World Aids Day Sunday, and have a working relationship with the Aids Resource Group of Evansville. We are constantly looking for ways to partner with other groups who honor the same value of inclusiveness as we do.

Family Needs and Clothing Center

A dedicated group of our members offer two full rooms of free clothing for men, women and children, as well as certain needed supplies like diapers, toiletries, etc. It is open two days a week, and has served hundreds of disadvantaged families.

Pet Lovers Ministry

At St. Lucas we love our pets. We offer a free community-wide blessing ceremony for typical house pets—cats, dogs, birds, hamsters, etc. We also recognize the pain of pet loss, and acknowledge the passing of a pet with cards and gifts.

Music Ministry

St. Lucas provides opportunities for people to exercise their musical talents. We have a chancel choir, a bell choir, and an orchestra, as well as opportunities for soloists of all kinds.

Congregations Acting for Justice and Empowerment (CAJE) a tax-exempt, non-profit corporation currently comprised of 19 religious congregations of various faith traditions in southwestern Indiana. It draws together people of faith to act powerfully in addressing local community issues through relationship building, direct action, and negotiation with elected officials. CAJE has been influential in expanding bus routes in the METS network, increasing the size of the Vanderburgh County Drug Court, and equipping county sheriff vehicles with Narcan, a drug that immediately reverses the effects of opiates in a person who has overdosed, for whatever reason. In the past it has also addressed public housing, homeless youth and was vital in the creation of a community Dental Clinic that served the poor of our community.

CB exists to “make chemo a more comfortable and life giving experience physically, mentally and spiritually.” St. Lucas provides blankets and other items for use in the CB program. We also have several members who volunteer to sit with those undergoing chemo treatment, helping to fill lonely hours with warmth and compassion.

TASC
Test Assessing Secondary Completion is Indiana’s high school equivalency program, providing training in the area of reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies.

UCC
St. Lucas is joyfully affiliated with the United Church of Christ, and its regional affiliate, the Indiana Kentucky Conference of the United Church of Christ. See www.ucc.org and www.ikcucc.org for more information.

Creation Care

The Creation Care Team strives to inspire faithful stewardship of all creation by promoting recycling, energy conservation, and care for our Earth. The team also identifies educational opportunities in the Tri-State area that focus on environmental issues.

Other Ministries

Of no lesser importance are some of the other ministries we support, including Jacobsville Area Community Corporation (JACC), Habitat for Humanity, exercise classes free to the public, and a strong working relationship with Southwestern Indiana Regional Council on Aging (SWIRCA). There are also countless volunteer hours that members of our church give privately to organizations around town.
